In Between The Sidewalk Cracks

In collaboration with Regional Archive

Sticky hands, black walnut balls, sticks and rocks, sand in the mouth, monkey bars. This summer the playground has become my art studio. In the art studio, the imagination runs wild. In the playground, the body runs wild too. My visual language has become red, blue and yellow, filled with the infrastructure of playgrounds, ladders, springs and slides. With my toddler as my guide, we’ve park hopped, splash-padded, and spent just as much time exploring the spaces in between on our way to and from. The repetitious and monotonous nature of our everyday circuits become interesting when we take the time to slow down and meditate on the taken-for-granted, like she does by her very nature. “In Between the Sidewalk Cracks” refers to this kind of meditation—tuning into childlike frequencies and the colourful in-between worlds hidden within the overlooked.
