To The Most Elegant Woman I Know

With the passing of my grandmother, the premise behind this book was to create a compilation of memories through photography and writing that could be passed down to generations.

My mother and sister Marianna and Veronika were also involved in the help of writing this piece, which was both a beautiful way to reveal certain memories about our grandmother my sister and I hadn’t even known.

The story began in Slovakia where she was born, and the 1960s carried on into life in communist Czechoslovakia with my grandmother and mother, and then ended in Canada. the design of the book was focused on maintaining importance to the images, and the writing helped aid and carry on the narrative, inserting key spreads throughout the book.

The design is done in two languages, where each language is a different colour for easy differentiation, with callout moments showing certain phrases my grandmother was known for saying.

The success of this project came from how personal and close the project became to us, through scanning old photographs found in her apartment, and going through letters and letters that she wrote to Canada during communist Czechoslovakia.
